A Comparison Between K-Style and Half-Round Gutters

When picking a gutter for your home, you’ll have to choose between k-style and half-round gutters. While both options are viable, it’s still important to know about either option’s characteristics. What do these two options look like, and how do they function differently? Here’s a rundown from the most trusted roofer in the area.

K-style Gutters

K-style gutters are defined by having a flat surface attached to the fascia board, a flat bottom, and a contoured surface facing out. K-style gutters are used for both modern and traditional home designs, and are almost always installed in a seamless configuration.

Half-Round Gutters

Half-round gutters are easily recognizable by their U-shaped profile. Because this type of gutter doesn’t have a flat side to attach to the fascia, it is usually suspended by evenly-spaced brackets. A roofing company will usually install half-round gutters in a sectional configuration, which is perfect for most traditional home designs.

Capacity vs Maintenance

K-style gutters are very popular because of the amount of rainwater they can contain. A 5-inch k-style gutter can carry significantly more water runoff than a similarly-sized half-round gutter. However, half-round gutters offer better draining capabilities since their bottom surface does not have sharp angles that make cleanup more difficult.

Installation and Appearance

Because of the way they are installed, k-style and half-round gutters can have very different upfront costs. K-style gutters are much easier to install because half-round options require the addition of individual brackets to support the trough. However, roof repair experts say that half-round gutters are more visually appealing, especially if the right type of brackets are installed.
